The Princess of Kaya

Now a screenplay

The Princess of Kaya – A Romeo and Juliet in Africa – Where tradition governs the course of your destiny.

--Readers would have a taste of sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and finally a bittersweet taste at the thought of it all.

“Europe is breath-taking but there is no place like home.” Beautiful, young and naïve Princess Kaya has returned home to her father’s coastal West African kingdom after schooling in England. While traveling, her entourage is attacked by a band of enemy Tekland soldiers. A mysterious, brooding and indisputably handsome stranger named Aadil comes to her rescue and escorts her safely back home.

Princess Kaya’s twentieth birthday calls for a great celebration in the kingdom of Kaya. In the massive crowd that has gathered to honor her, Kaya glimpses Aadil. Later, he gets past her vigilant bodyguard for furtive meetings with Kaya to begin a clandestine relationship. Meanwhile, the king has surprising plans for his daughter and announces at Kaya’s birthday fete, her engagement to the Prince of Bashir, the kingdom of Kaya’s closest ally. Yet even as Kaya stands poised to marry Prince Anthony for the sake of forming a political alliance, she feels her burgeoning love for Aadil. Kaya and Aadil share moments of forbidden passion before Kaya discovers that Aadil is in fact a Tek, and thereby an enemy of her people.

This marks the beginning of an endless resurfacing of lies and secrets from the shores of this fantastic yet war-stricken West African Island. It would take a beautiful, mature and sophisticated Queen Kaya to dissolve the bad blood between Kaya and Tekland and finally restore peace. But can she restore the respect from her people? Can she stay married to Prince Anthony? Can she forgive Aadil? Better yet, Kaya has one secret she must share with Aadil.

The Princess of Kaya – How it began - In the author's own words

The complexity and numerous characters wasn’t what I anticipated in the beginning. It started out as a simple love scene on a balcony between two lovers and then it began to grow. Somewhere down the road, I picked up a pencil and drew a map of the island where the story takes place…in West Africa…Palms and the Atlantic Ocean, all coming from my childhood. Then it came to me. This unique story was a means of educating about Africa while entertaining at the same time.

The screenplay is an adaptation of the novel.

In a strict African society where legendary customs and traditions prevail, a young and naïve princess must choose between Prince Hasani, her husband pledged to her for political reasons; and Aadil, a patriot from the very kingdom that she is sworn to destroy.
